Hello everyone,
I’m excited to join this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I’m a founding member of The Keys Guild, an organization created to bridge the gap between individuals with unwanted items in their homes and experts who can sell those items for their highest value. Our network includes about 200 professional organizers, realtors, and senior move managers, as well as dozens of experts, including some associated with Antique Roadshow, prominent auction houses, and 2 refineries.
As a professional organizer working in clients’ homes, I’ve become a trusted resource for identifying and selling valuable items. In my role as a Collectibles Advisor, I consult on virtually every category of collectibles, but I primarily focus on fine jewelry, sterling silver, and coins. These categories account for 80% of my income as a Collectibles Advisor.
I’ve developed relationships with refineries like Hi-Tech and Elemetal, which provide excellent payouts. While I don’t refine items myself, I determine the best approach for each piece—whether that’s refining, selling through wholesale buyers, or utilizing platforms like eBay and auction houses such as Doyle or EBTH. For example, I recently worked with a client who inherited a coin collection. Among the random pennies, I found a $20 90% gold Eagle, which fetched a higher price melted than selling through my wholesale buyers.
Often, my clients have inherited items without realizing their value. One client thought their parents never spent money on jewelry, but I discovered $10,000 worth of gold necklaces mixed in with inexpensive costume pieces. Another client inherited raw materials from a jewelry-making spouse, including a lump of clay that turned out to be 95% silver, refined at Hi-Tech for a substantial payout.
I’ve also become a resource for other professional organizers in my area, who refer clients to me when they uncover potentially valuable items. A memorable referral involved a gold tooth that tested at 50% gold. I’m currently exploring ways to connect with dentists for dental scrap but haven’t made significant progress—if anyone has tips for this niche, I’d love to hear them! While I’m comfortable using my consignment agreement and paying after I get paid, I’m cautious about estimating the value of items like dental gold without precise assay results.
Building trust with clients and my community has been the foundation of my work, and I’m always eager to learn more. I look forward to participating in discussions here, exchanging insights, and hearing about your experiences in gold, silver, and platinum collecting, investing, and refining.
