i mostly use wet chemistry methods, selective precipitation, electrolysis etc. i don't really have access to industrial equipment so wet processing is easier. i can heat to about 1400C for smelting, but often it is more rewarding to stop before obtaining the metal at a brightly coloured metal salt. stainless steel swarf off the lathe makes beautiful bright orange sodium dichromate crystals, hard drive magnets make neodymium oxalate crystals that change colour under different lighting types
